I discovered that when I married Michael I believed that it wasn’t safe to totally commit myself 100% to the relationship. There was a part of me that was afraid that he might have problems with alcohol or violence. I went into the marriage telling myself, well if that ever happened, I could just leave. This meant that there was a part of me that didn’t totally trust him. I didn’t trust him with my money and I didn’t trust him not to drink. I felt it was always important to have a safety emergency fund and access to a vehicle as a safety net so I could escape if I needed to and move at a moment’s notice if things got bad. I now understand how not being 100% committed to the success of our relationship could attract negative things like Michael not trusting me or thinking that I am going to leave him, and so always seeking reassurance that I wouldn’t leave by phoning constantly, always wanting to know where I am, and interrogating me. I now believe that when I communicate this understanding to Michael, and show him that I am fully committed to our relationship and that I trust and believe in him, the quality of our relationship will improve and we will have a more peaceful, loving, supportive, and healthy partnership.
